The human body has layers of muscles – muscles on top of muscles. Deep tissue massage is an advanced technique focused on manipulating deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE PURPOSE

Deep tissue massage centers on realigning the deeper layers of connective and muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the tense areas, either following or going across the fiber’s of the muscles, tendons and fascia. It is particularly helpful for continually tight and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.

Deep tissue massage is much more than just a  “hard massage.” In contrast to only relaxing muscles, the specific lengthening of fascia, muscles and tendons offers many benefits such as increased joint movement, quicker injury recovery, better posture, as well as feelings of well-being.

Deep tissue massage is often used to treat:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Limited Mobility
  • Recovery from Injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, and sports injury)
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Postural Problems
  • Osteoarthritis Pain
  • Muscle Tension or Spasm.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE GOALS

Deep tissue has been found to improve muscle function and range of motion, break up scar tissue and adhesions, and decrease pain. It is thought that when muscles are tensed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.  A deep tissue massage may help loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because many toxins are released, it is recommended to drink plenty of water after a deep tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.

Goals of Deep Tissue Massage:

  1. Reduce pain.
  2. Improve posture.
  3. Increase flexibility and perception of looseness.
  4. Improve fluidity of movement.
  5. Restore metabolic status of tissue.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE TREATMENT

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as a more classic superficial massage. The difference is that the pressure will generally be more intense, and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. The strokes are the same, but the movement is slower and deeper. At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the therapist when they hit a tender spot and if any discomfort you experience is outside your comfort range. Due to the focused nature of the session, the treatment can become intense at times.

Occasionally there is some stiffness or tenderness after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may suggets applying ice to the area after the deep tissue massage.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage ?

The benefits of deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).

Unlike Swedish massage, which has a relaxing effect and uses lighter pressure, deep tissue massage is done using deep finger pressure with strokes that are firm and slow. Deep tissue massage has several therapeutic effects and can be used to treat many different conditions. This type of massage is ideal for the treatment of major muscle groups like the neck or lower back. It can also be used to relieve strain and treat injuries in your joints and tendons.

What To Expect

The first thing to bear in mind is that deep tissue massage is used for therapy and rehabilitation, not relaxation. So you need to be prepared to feel some discomfort during a deep tissue massage and even after. You will most probably lie on your stomach or back while the massage therapist applies various degrees of pressure on tight muscles that have issues and are lying dormant in your body.

You will experience some pain during the massage as this form of massage concentrates on relieving strain and tension from tissues that go deeper. The pain could also be because the massage uses movements against the muscles rather than moving with them. But if you think you’re experiencing intense pain, immediately inform your therapist. The best way to make the most of a deep tissue massage is to be as relaxed as you can and trust your therapist to massage your pain away. That’s why it’s important to go to a certified and experienced massage therapist for a deep tissue massage.

  1. Lowers High Blood Pressure
  2. Treats Back Pain
  3. Helps Arthritis Pain/Symptoms
  4. Muscle Rehab
  5. Breaks Down Scar Tissue
  6. Relieves Stress
  7. Increase Joint Mobility
  8. Reduces Chronic Pain

Precautions

Because of the therapeutic nature of deep tissue massage, you should be careful on some fronts before you have one. Here are a few precautions to remember:

  • Do not opt for deep tissue massage if you have been diagnosed with blood clots in the past since the massage may dislodge the clots. Talk to your doctor of you have or are at risk of forming blood clots.
  • Check with your doctor if you have had chemotherapy, radiation, recent surgery, or any medical condition. Also, avoid deep tissue massage if you have osteoporosis.

4 Reasons to Incorporate Massage Therapy Into Your Workout

Summer is right around the corner, so the tried-and-true fitness enthusiasts are hitting the gym this Spring. Though you may be busy planning out your workout routines for the rest of the season, there’s a critical recovery method you’re likely overlooking—Massage Therapy!

Lafayette Workout Massage Therapy Lafayette Workout Massage Therapy

Indeed, many professional athletes and their coaches have sworn by the benefits of massage therapy for decades, with some professional teams even keeping a massage therapist on their payroll.

So what wondrous effects do massages have for athletes and workout enthusiasts?

1. Matters of the Mind- The key to any good performance lies in your overall mindset. Positivity and confidence begets extraordinary results that you can be proud of. But we’re all human and the everyday stressors of life can weigh on us even as we seek to escape them through healthy methods. Naturally, massage therapy has physiological effects, but its psychological benefits are vast and equally as important. Massage therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety and relieve stress and tension while simultaneously promoting relaxation by activating the Parasympathetic nervous system. While undergoing your much-needed recovery, you’re increasing your dopamine and serotonin levels, and reducing the cortisol levels, which are directly linked to stress throughout the body. This relaxed state encourages better focus, aiding you in your next competition or workout.

2. Rapid Recovery- Let’s face it, when we first hit the gym there’s going to be some aches and pains. Though we all know that’s a part of the trade; to get into great shape we’ll go through some discomfort. But our recovery time doesn’t have to be extended or painful. Budget in time for massage therapy! Massage therapy has been shown to drastically reduce recovery time, allowing you to feel better and work harder. Recovery time is expedited because massage therapy dilates the blood vessels, allowing for increased circulation and oxygenation of fatigued muscles. Massage therapy also eliminates lactic acid and other toxins that accumulate during workouts, and it improves your overall flexibility and range of motion.

3. Eliminating Inflammation- Working out is a great mental relief and it allows you to literally work away the stressors of the day, but there are outlying factors that you need to account for, namely unwanted inflammation of joints. When we dive deep into working out we’re putting our bodies under a great deal of stress that it will recover from, but the shock leaves the body with various aches and if the muscles haven’t been utilized lately they’ll likely inflame in response to your workout routine. Luckily, there’s a remedy for your malady–massage therapy! Research has shown that massage therapy reduces inflammation in the body and encourages growth of new mitochondria in the body, the energy-producing units of cells.

4. Prevention Is Key- The American Massage Therapy association (AMTA) has found that regularly receiving massage therapy can reduce your chances of injury as you begin to delve back into working out regularly. Regular massages can be integral to your workout regimen or training arsenal. Aside from the relaxed mental and physical state you enter during your massage, the AMTA has shown that massage therapy helps reduce muscle tension, allows athletes to monitor their muscle tone and decrease stiffness and soreness post-exercise. These factors allow fitness enthusiasts to regulate their physique, ensuring that they properly stretch, relieve muscle tension, and prevent injuring fatigued muscles.

With fitness season kicking into high gear, and summer just around the corner, you’re undoubtedly going to start working out and refining your physique. While you’re focused on putting your body through the trials to achieve your goals, don’t forget to treat yourself to a little tenderness.

Lafayette Deep Tissue Massage

Lafayette Deep Tissue Massage | Therapeutic Massage 337-909-0440 Licensed Establishment E4149. 3205 Johnston Street Lafayette Louisiana 70503

Deep Tissue Massage Benefits

Deep Tissue Massage is commonly misunderstood modality. It gets the assumption that “Deep Tissue” means “Deep Pressure”. But there’s so much more to it! Similar to Swedish Massage, the client will lie on a massage table and remain modestly draped by the therapist. Deep Tissue focuses on stretching FASCIA, a three dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports all the muscles, bones and organs. The therapist will work layer by layer through connective tissue and muscles down to the deepest accessible layers of muscle.

Deep tissue work creates micro-tears in the fascia, which fill with elastic and collagen in about three days, creating muscles that are more flexible, supple and have a greater range of motion. Deep Tissue work shouldn’t be painful; a well trained therapist will work very slowly, within the client’s tolerance, however it can often result in a little soreness after

BENEFITS:

Relief of chronic pain

Improvement of posture

Improvement of range of motion

Improvement with injury rehabilitation

Reduction of inflammation disorder such as arthritis

Breaking up and eventually erasing scar tissue

Increase in serotonin production, the hormone that promotes happiness and good feelings

Reduction in stress
